Game Review – Bejeweled 2 Deluxe

21310575298_maezokshellabonewall.jpgReleased by PopCap games on May 5, 2006, Bejeweled 2 Deluxe is one of those rare sequels that actually manages to outdo its predecessor. Basic game-play works just like it did in the original. Players simply swap two adjacent gems in order to match three or more gems of the same colour in a horizontal or vertical fashion. Matching gems causes them to disappear, with neighbouring gems shifting position to fill the newly-created gaps. Players remain on a level until no more matches can be made. The game is simple enough to be picked up by anyone within a matter of seconds, but is exciting enough to keep one addicted for days. Never again do casual gamers have an excuse to complain about boredom!
Bejeweled 2 Deluxe maintains the same exciting game-play everyone has come to enjoy without the boredom exhibited by the legions of copycat games that have flooded the market. It comes with four different gaming modes to choose from, including two more that have been added for this new release. Players can choose from Classic, Action, Endless, and Puzzle modes. The Classic mode offers game-play exactly like the original Bejeweled. Action mode puts the player up against the clock, forcing the player to make moves quickly before time runs out. Endless mode lets the player get his or her game on until, well, forever! Choose this mode for virtually endless game play in attempts to gain the highest score. The Puzzle mode gives players a chance to exercise their brains by solving gem-clearing puzzles that get harder and harder as the game progresses.
This new Bejeweled release adds a few new features to enhance game-play. An exploding Power Gem is offered to players who match 4 gems in a row. A Hyper Cube is awarded to those matching 5 gems. This Hyper Cube will destroy all gems on the game board of a particular colour. Players are awarded extra points when they manage to concurrently clear multiple sets of gems.
Bejeweled 2 Deluxe is not just a boring set of repetitive jewel-matching levels. New levels provide a better gaming experience and mystery gems that add to the game’s excitement. It is packed with beautiful his-resolution graphics with new backdrops on every level. Players get to view new mountain scenes, beaches, and beautiful skylines every time they play. Although some might balk at the game’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” like sound, others will find this familiar and entertaining. At least the sound effects caused by moving and clearing jewels sound good.
Bejeweled 2 Deluxe is suitable for all gaming audiences. It is available in stores and online downloads for both the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS operating system series.

What is a Game Server?

11310575301_imag0181.jpgSo, just what is a game server? Before answering that question, it’s important to understand how online gaming works. Many popular games today, first person shooters in particular, support online play. Such Internet-based play expands the game to whole new levels, and provides an experience not possible in single player environments. Players ranging in numbers from half a dozen to as many as sixty-four can all join what’s called a game server and play on the same map (game level) at the same time. Gaming servers work much like web servers, but instead of hosting websites, host game matches that others can join. Though the game itself is not loaded from the server, important game information such as player scores and rules are. Think of them in terms of a soccer stadium. The stadium provides a scoreboard and a field to play on, and the players come to the stadium to play.

While it is possible for a gamer to host a server on his computer, such servers are only suitable for a small number of players due to the slow speed of their connections. Game servers of any decent size are hosted by what are known as server providers in large data centers. With high-speed connection speeds and high-end server hardware, these providers can host servers of any size. The most popular games hosted these days include the Battlefield series, Counter Strike: Source, the Call of Duty games, the Medal of Honor series, and Unreal Tournament. Most providers offer free support, the ability to change the hosted game on the fly, free voice servers for oral communication, and web hosting. Prices for gaming servers vary greatly from provider to the provider and game to game, but the average is around $2 per player. People who run game servers sometimes pay for them out of their own pockets, but often times a group of gamers will form what is called a clan and share the cost of the server. Once a server is setup, anyone can play on a server for free, though some servers are private and require a password to join.

They make it possible for game lovers worldwide to get together and play their favorite games in an online environment, and have created a whole new market in the gaming world and have changed the way people view gaming. As technology increases, it will be interesting to see how the game server market changes.
